The Sailing Swains: Sailing, Science, and Making a Difference
Sun, Oct 14th, 2018
1:30 pm

Come to listen to tales of adventure on the high seas at the Wellfleet OysterFest this year. In September 2017, the Swain family—Steve, Sarah, Lucy (then 12), Jessie (then 10), and Stanley (then 5)—set out on a 6-month sailing trip from their home on Cape Cod to the Bahamas aboard the 47’ sailboat Flying Fish. For the kids, especially Lucy and Jessie who are passionate about the environment and science, the trip was very much a learning opportunity and a chance to engage in scientific inquiry and environmental activism. Along the way, the girls acquired and towed a trawl net and documented the presence of plastics in the ocean for the non-profit 5 Gyres, which they also reported on their blog the Sailing Swains. Join Lucy and Jessie Swain to learn more about their journey, their findings, how the trip changed them, and what they are doing now. Free, no registration required.
