A talk by Phineas Baxandall, a leader in promoting government transparency, especially to disclose corporate subsidies and contracting through searchable websites. As a Senior Analyst and Program Director for the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, he has published yearly "report cards" of state transparency which have generated hundreds of media stories around the country and motivated governors to improve public disclosure. He is particularly interested in how the internet has increased possibilities for making government more accountable to the public and how to avoid transparency from being hijacked as political propaganda. Previously, Phineas was a an award-winning lecturer at Harvard University and has published widely on a variety of topics in political economy. He received his doctorate in Political Science from MIT in 2001
